Producing Job Search Materials
1. Write a résumé based on your experience, skills, and education. The most common type of résumé uses a chronological format and lists the most recently held position first. For each job, list the job title, dates of employment, company name and location, and a brief description of your responsibilities. Awards received related to your work history; volunteer activities in your community; and the offer of references to be made available upon request should also be included.
2. Choose the right type of résumé for your job history. For individuals who are recently out of school, or who have chronological gaps in their experience, a functional résumé may be best. This type of résumé lists all previous work and life experience, including volunteer and extracurricular activities. Take time to consider which type of format, chronological or functional, works best for you.
3. Create a cover letter to attach to your résumé. A cover letter is a marketing tool to catch a potential employer’s attention. It should be brief and continually revised so that the emphasis fits each specific job that you are applying for. Emphasize why your are applying for the job, express your enthusiasm, and list specific strengths and achievements as they relate to the position.
